Special Issue Proposal Application

Insects, Volume 12, Issue 1 (January 2021) – 84 articles

Cover Story (view full-size image): In the last few years, a new pest, the black weevil Aclees taiwanensis Kȏno, 1933 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), native to Asia, has been threatening fig orchards in the Mediterranean area. The black weevil xylophagous larvae, compromising the phloem flux, cause plant death. There are no known natural enemies of this pest and its rapid diffusion all over the Mediterranean area can reasonably be expected due to the lack of specific EU regulations. In-depth knowledge of black weevil biology is needed for the early detection and management of A. taiwanensis infestations. This paper describes, under laboratory and field conditions, the main biological traits of A. taiwanensis and updates the known distribution of this species in Southern Europe, using a citizen science approach. View this paper.

Insects, Volume 12, Issue 2 (February 2021) – 104 articles

Cover Story (view full-size image): Erasmoneura vulnerata, a Nearctic leafhopper not damaging in North America, has become a new pest in North Italian vineyards. Winegrowers are worried because of severe leaf symptoms and the nuisance caused at harvest time. The selection of effective insecticides and the timing of their application are crucial for pest control. Field trials were carried out in Northeastern Italy to evaluate the impact of a number of insecticides against second-generation E. vulnerata. Among synthetic insecticides, the most effective were acetamiprid, flupyradifurone, and lambda-cyhalothrin. Regarding natural products, the most effective was kaolin. The identification of pest threshold levels and the evaluation of pesticide side effects on key natural enemies occurring in vineyards are required. View this paper

Insects, Volume 12, Issue 3 (March 2021) – 84 articles

Cover Story (view full-size image): Subterranean termites cause damage to man-made structures around the world and are continuing to invade new areas. Current practices for controlling termites generally target a single colony at a time, and, although effective in most instances, never reduce the overall termite pressure. An area-wide approach to pest management could offer a way of controlling termites at the population level. We tracked individual termite colonies within two field plots, before and after the introduction of termite baits, to assess the fate of these colonies and to determine if a termite-free area could be maintained with continued baiting. This approach was successful in significantly reducing the overall termite population, as well as eliminating both well-established and newly invading colonies. View this paper.
